4-Week Course: A History of Housing in Dublin

Update: This course is now fully booked. If you made an email enquiry, we will be in touch shortly.

Where did the Dublin tenements come from? Where were the first suburbs in Dublin?

This four-week course will explore the social and architectural history of housing of the capital during the 19th and 20th centuries. Examining key figures in Dublin’s housing history such as Herbert George Simms (Housing Architect to Dublin Corporation from 1932 until 1948), and Daithí P. Hanly (former Dublin City Architect), we will discover how housing in the inner-city and suburbia has changed over the decades.

Held over four consecutive Wednesdays, this free online course will consist of talks and discussions, led by Dublin Historian and lecturer Donal Fallon.

Week 1: Tenement Beginnings

Week 2: The First Suburbias: Townships and Victorian Dublin

Week 3: From Marino to Crumlin: Housing in the Free State

Week 4: Bally-far-out: Housing Since the 1950s
